League of Legend Review – Best Esport Game

by on July 3, 2023

League of Legends has traveled a large trajectory. The game was dreamed into existence when a desperate Riot tried to replace its falling DotA game. They wanted something that would inspire players in a similar setting as Warcraft III Defense of the Ancient map. The game has become the center of eSport gaming with more than 41 million concurrent viewers.

Hard Sell and Tough Start

When Riot founders tried to interest investors at the Game Developers Conference in 2007, they met a stone wall, as no one understood the possible financial benefits of a free-to-play game model. Even though this was popular in Asia, US investors were far from ready to fund this type of venture.

A year later, in 2008, Riot reached an agreement with Tencent to manage the project launch in China on October 7. The success of the Asian launch led to its North American debut in October 2009.

Critics and Players’ Response

.No other MOBA game has been met with a similar reception. Critics showered accolades on LoL, with an average rating of 8.5 – the lowest coming from Metacritic with a 78 out of 100. The bigger accolades came at the very first  Game Developers Choice Awards in 2010,

League of Legends won the following game major awards:

  1. Best Online Technology.
  2. Game Design.
  3. New Online Game.
  4. Visual Arts

It went on to win more awards at the 2011 Golden Joystick Awards.

However, the greatest achievement of Riot has been the eSport Games of League of Legends. In 2016, it outperformed all other eSport leagues in terms of personal event attendance as well as online viewing and TV viewership.

According to a New York Times report, it did better than the National Basketball Association, the World Series, and the Stanley Cup.

League of Legends is the best freemium game to date and players are anxiously awaiting the release of its MMORPG version.
