Dune: Awakening Gets New Reveal Trailer
There is no doubt that Frank Herbert’s science fiction epic Dune is enjoying a resurgence in media. One of the most notable developments in the series is Funcom’s entry with Dune: Awakening.
Gamers were invited to Warner Bros Studios in Los Angeles last week to see a sneak peek at what’s to come in this survival sandbox MMO, and what they saw was nothing short of spectacular.
“It’s been a hell of a journey,” Chief Creative Office Joel Bylos said. “It’s kind of funny because we sort of originally thought we’d be out before the first movie, that’s game development, that’s how it goes.”
Notably, he is not alone. There has been a lot of conversation about Dune: Awakening in the last few years, and this isn’t surprising since it has been in development for several years. The crowd laughed along as the statement was surprising, given that the game was only announced in August 2022 and the film adaptation of Dune: Part 1 had just been released a year earlier.
In any case, Dune: Part 2 has been released and Funcom gave fans the chance to see what the game is going to be like. As it turns out, Arrakis holds more value than just the appeal of a digital rendering of Herbert’s universe.

It’s possible you may be wondering where exactly Dune: Awakening takes place because the developers have already stated that you’ll meet many recognizable characters along the way. Although Joel didn’t mention any details here, Dune: Awakening actually takes place in an alternate timeline. Here, Paul Atreides makes a decision that pushes players back to where the game started.
Players will still find plenty of easter eggs from the beloved world they’ve come to love and enjoy, even though some lore aspects are not canon (such as the Dune Encyclopedia).
