Civilization VI To Have New User Interface

by on May 21, 2016

For Civilization as a series, the ability for the gamer to discern elements of the game without hassle is vital. As there is much going on in each turn. Firaxis has often gone with a simple and elegant User Interface for players to use. With Civilization VI, that will be no different, however, the UI will be different from previous Civilization games.

“Civ 5 has a beautiful UI – we were really happy with how that turned out. The Art Deco theme was a great fit for that project. But we wanted to do something different this time, and one theme that kept coming up and seemed like a great fit – and I was surprised we hadn’t done it before – is the Age of Exploration.” Brian Bussati told IGN

Throughout the game, you’ll see compasses, astrolabes, and various other exploring and discovering tools. However, they will not “advance” in looks as the game progress, it will remain the same. This is so players don’t get confused and have to learn a new way to control it via the new technology.

Civilization VI comes to Xbox One, PC, and PS4 October 21st.

I liked the user interface in Civilization V, but I don't think this looks bad at all. Maybe a little design overhaul would be good, but the arrangement is nice.

Everything in the game is okay and I don't think that anything is wrong. Yes, we can expect little arrangement.

It looks really good. There were some of the versions of Civ that I didn´t like, but in almost every game they streamlined or improved the GUI making it less clicks to do what you need to do.

The new interface looks really cool. I think it will be even more user friendly then Civ V`s.

I like the new user interface. It has the old concept, but with easier structure.I also appreciate the fact that they are still thinking about new players, and keep working on making the interface more simple to new players, without removing the nostalgia from other games.

I like the new one more than the older version. I think it's easier to get around and it looks way more lively. It also seems more user friendly.

  • June 14, 2016 at 11:06 am

I don't have any qualms with this. It's not exactly a radical departure from previous interfaces, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It certainly looks nice, from the little bit shown. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the rest of it looks across the board.

Objects related to the 'Age of exploration' are a perfect choice, though I'd somewhat prefer if the major elements from the old UI stayed. But, CIV is one the rare series that is evolving in a good direction. CIV 4 was batter than CIV 3, CIV 5 was better than CIV4. I think we can safely say that no. 6 will be the best CIV yet. 😎

It might take time to get used to them, but I honestly think it's a great idea. Change is always great, at least they are trying to mix it up instead of sticking to the same old style of gameplay like other games who release a sequel every year. At least they are taking the time and effort in this one to make the game better, so the only thing to worry about now is if these changes will really hold up in the future.

Some upgrades to older user interfaces from the past games are always nice, as long as they don't completely ruin it.

  • June 22, 2016 at 10:04 am

It doesn't really seem to detract that much from that of Civ V (which was already fine IMO), so I think I'll be able to pick up this UI pretty quickly.

  • June 22, 2016 at 10:50 pm

I didn't have any problems with the UI in Civ V, but there is always room for improvement, so it's good they're willing to mix it up. I'm liking the new Age of Exploration theme they are going with, it seems perfect for Civilization. It also looks more user-friendly and that's always a good thing.

  • June 22, 2016 at 11:57 pm

I like it a lot, it looks quite nice. It really suits the Civilisation VI needs. It's pretty simple, modern, that's what I want!

  • June 23, 2016 at 6:16 pm

I was hoping they would keep the Civ 5 user interface. This one is pretty cool too, I guess. But the Civ 5 one was perfect! I don't get why they would change it. I guess we'll have to get used to it.

  • June 23, 2016 at 7:58 pm

I wasn't entirely convinced that Civ VI needed a new UI, but the one shown for the game looks fine to me. It's nice looking and quite functional, and it's nice that they didn't just copy what worked from the previous game. So I don't have any real reason to complain.

  • June 29, 2016 at 1:45 pm

Civ V's interface was pretty good, but I think this one is even cleaner and more user friendly, taking a good look at it. I think I'll like this change, though of course it'll take some time to get used to, just like any of the other titles.

  • June 30, 2016 at 7:00 am

It's unavoidable. If you compare the first civilizations to civilization VI, they look like they are from worlds apart. This is just an evolution from what we have now. I am looking forward to see the changes.

  • July 1, 2016 at 5:23 pm

I like the new one. It's refreshing after seeing the old one for so long. I get more excited about the game the more I read about it. October 21st can't come soon enough!

  • July 25, 2016 at 4:12 pm

Hm, I'm not really fond of UI changes when they come out since you have to get used to the new one and all that, but if it's better for gameplay and it's more efficient, then I'm cool with it :D.

  • July 25, 2016 at 4:46 pm

This definitely looks more streamlined, which I'm perfectly okay with! It's not that the UI was bad in the old games. Heck, I haven't had a problem with the UI in any Civilization game I've played, but change can definitely benefit games. I think this will be a breath of fresh air and I'm looking forward to giving it a go when the game is released.

I personally think it looks the same as Civilization V's interface, they have not changed it that much, I feel like it needs some enhancements, the panels and bars should be modified, if I was the designer in charge of making the bars I would definitely make them look nicer, I am not saying that it looks ugly but it could be better.

Well things don't really have to look super beautiful but yea I see what you mean. But I don't really advocate change since it's just learning something new that you probably could've done fine without.

  • July 26, 2016 at 1:14 pm

Well, we're already in 2016, everything they make these days is beautiful, good looking and modern, I do not see why it does not have to be like that when it should definitely be, remember you're paying for it and you shouldreceive the best as a customer.

  • August 2, 2016 at 3:13 am

Anything that promises to be more user friendly has my vote. I don't think it's that much of a difference from the user interface of V but then I may not be the best person to ask about that.

  • August 2, 2016 at 7:50 am

Judging from the pats I think that it only can get better. They have shown time and time again that they really know how to make a game and I don't think that this time it will be any different.

  • August 2, 2016 at 4:36 pm

Well although I am a firm believer in old adage of "if it ain't broke don't fix it", and I certainly think that It applies to the Civilization games in most aspects, user interface included. That said, though, I am ready for some changes and my general excitement for the game itself cannot be ruined, so it is a good time to introduce it. I can't wait to experience it for myself. Thanks for sharing.

Normally, I don't like interface changes in any game, as you have to kind of learn the entire game again, but looking at the new interface I personally think it is much more functional then the earlier one.

I personally noticed 2 things in the above screenshot:

    • More options
    • Even spreading of the options

Both of these should actually make the game easier to play.

  • August 3, 2016 at 12:50 am

WOW! That interface looks really interesting. The panel and the colour combination of the panels caught my eye. I just hope the graphics will be better. The developer worked really hard for the game.

The first feature impresses me. When I to play the previous versions of the game, I used to think that the game should have more options. Now, I am finally happy to see the new interface of the game.

I liked the streamlined look of this it looks very similar to a Civilization V mod I have used before. I like any changes to the UI that makes the map and actually play area clearer and more open. I am very excited to play around with the Civilization VI UI and then to see how it modded to make it even more personalized.

You're right, they're looking really nice, regarding to the graphics, you should update yourself, they're working really hard on the graphics, even more than in the whole game itself, it's going to be a hit, for sure.

I don't think the change that it will be unrecognizable. I'm sure it will be more ergonomic and the general layout will be cleaner.

I am sure the changes will definitely hold up in the future. They are really spending a lot of time in this game and that is why it will surely yield the results.

Graphics is already awesome in this game. I think they should work on the interface and other aspects of the game because it will make the game overall good.

According to what they've shared about the game, the interface is already done, they're still working on the graphics and some mechanics they're thinking of adding, but we still have to wait for them to come up with more news.

The structure is easy and it is also very interesting. The developers did an amazing job with the interface. I am just waiting for the interface.

The entire world is waiting for the game and we are mad for the game. I am also sure that it is going to be one of the biggest games of the year.

Probably, yes. It all depends on how hard the developers work on it, for sure.

I do not really like changes in games, especially when they were good before. I do actually like the new look for civilization 6. It looks like it will be great for the game and I really think I will enjoy it.

  • September 18, 2016 at 10:28 am

It looks good to me though I'm not a fan of the design or aesthetic elements but that's just a minor problem and I'm sure I'll get over it quickly once I play the game especially if the gameplay and improvements are good.
