In a recent interview with GI.biz, CD Projekt RED CEO Marcin Iwinski talked up the developer’s next upcoming game, Cyberpunk 2077 and just how ambitious the project is. Also, Iwinski shared some more details about CD Projekt RED’s model and recipe for success. CD Projekt RED plans to go big with Cyberpunk 2077, thanks to the huge success of last year’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That particular game scored CD Projekt RED Game of the Year and Developer of the Year at the 2015 Video Game Awards.
Speaking on Cyberpunk 2077, Iwinski stated, “[Cyberpunk 2077 will be] more ambitious on every single front, in the development and on the marketing side.” CD Projekt RED plans on spitting its staff into four distinct groups, not all of which will be working on Cyberpunk 2077. Some of the staff will be looking into penetrating “new gaming segments.”
With regard to CD Projekt RED’s business model, Iwinski added: “For us, it’s never about money. Yes, we deliver results, but we always explain to our investors that we have a long-term perspective. They shouldn’t expect us to annualize, or suddenly start releasing games just because there’s a business opportunity. Fundamentally, The Witcher 3 has proven that… and right now, we have a lot of credit, so we should use that and take the time to make Cyberpunk something really meaningful for the whole industry. It has to reach the next quality bar, and I’m not talking just for us, but for the market.”
He continued: “If we look at our role models, what Rockstar is doing is amazing. It’s not like, ‘We have to ship a game or we may not hit our financial goals.’ It’s, ‘Here’s GTA V, and by the way, it’s the best game ever made.’ We’re all looking forward to Red Dead Redemption 2, because you know they’ll show something and you’ll be like, ‘Oh my god.'”
Cyberpunk 2077 is slated for a release somewhere in the window of 2017-2021. The game is set in 2077 in the metropolis Night City, in a world where advanced technologies are both the salvation and curse of humanity.
