Amazon Under Fire – Is New Update an ARPG?
Amazon’s upcoming console release and PC version of its MMO has certainly attracted some controversy. A vague announcement has fans worried the game is no longer an MMO but instead an ARPG.
During the Summer Game Fest’s 2024 showcase, Amazon announced the remodeled New World: Aeternum. The game would be a remake of the PC MMO and a new console release. It combines all that is in the PC version including the recent Rise of the Angry Earth expansion. The upgrade will include an open-world PvP zone and a 10-player raid.
Some aspects of the announcement were confusing, and Amazon’s FAQ doesn’t quite clarify. For one thing, the developers have been promoting that New World: Aeternum can be played solo or cooperatively, which people take to mean two players.
The Debate – Is New Update an ARPG?
At the moment of this post, Amazon’s FAQ page doesn’t refer to Aeternum as an MMO; rather, the studio describes it as an “action RPG.” Does this mean larger groups won’t be available?
In the context of a console game, this might be semantics, describing how New World differs from a tab-targeted MMO. But it ignores all the other action combat MMOs, like The Elder Scrolls Online and Black Desert.
Many of the worries come from PC Game’s article, which states directly that the MMORPG will be closed and replaced with an ARPG. Other forums have been more cautious, as there is little evidence of this.
New World: Aeternum does have everything a modern MMORPG is known for, but it isn’t an ARPG like many people would assume. However, the fact that the New World website doesn’t state it clearly as an MMO, has become a sight for sore eyes.
Amazon will soon address the issue and put an end to unnecessary speculations. Meanwhile, let’s wait for the update.
