Walkscape Closed beta Test Opens New Year Gaming
Walkscape MMORPG is set to open closed beta during the first weeks of the new year, 2024. The studio which has acquired a license from Jagex to promote the Runescape Runescape-inspired game, announced the news on its X page.
Unlike most mobile MMORPGs, WalkScape introduces a unique twist. Instead of active gameplay, players progress by walking in real life. As players set out on a journey through diverse areas of the World of Arenum, they engage in activities, discover services, and discover new locations.
Walkscape developers have a Reddit community of over 15k followers who are expected to participate in the upcoming closed beta test.
According to a report published on Hardcore Gamer, Schampu Studios was able to ink an agreement with Jagex, the developer of Runescape. The post stated:
“The agreement with Jagex involves WalkScape obtaining an official license to use the “RuneScape” trademarks in its marketing materials and within the game itself. Negotiations were conducted with Jagex’s legal team, resulting in a positive outcome where Jagex has granted permission for WalkScape to use the specific trademark.”
In addition, the report pointed out that Schampu was unable to acquire a more extensive license that would allow the studio to integrate images or lore from the Runescape MMORPG. Although the studio may use the game’s title for marketing purposes, it was unable to use characters or elements of the Runescape Universe.
“The agreement includes clear guidelines on the permissible use of the trademark, and it is noted that other elements such as the world of Gielinor or in-game characters and bosses are not authorized for use. The agreement is characterized as a positive collaboration, with appreciation expressed for Jagex’s legal team’s patience and support. Transparency is maintained, and the community is encouraged to ask any questions about the agreement.”
Walkscape is set to enter closed beta test on January 18, 2024.
