by on June 17, 2016

Sony PlayStation and Square Enix unveiled a new trailer with new gameplay footage at NieR: Automata, an upcoming effort from PlatinumGames. You can check out the new video in the player below.

The game is set in the distant future after invaders from another world attack without warning. They’ve unleashed a new threat in the world, weapons called machine lifeforms. Mankind was then driven from Earth and takes refuge on the Moon. The Council of Humanity then makes a resistance of android soldiers called the YorHa to try and take back the Earth.

The game as a strong pedigree. All the key members from the creative team from the first NieR game are back for Automata as well. Akihiko Yoshida is the game’s lead character designer. His credits include such Square Enix titles as Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy Tactics. Yoko Taro is the creative director for the game, and Yosuke Saito is attached as the producer, with Keiichi Okabe returning from the first Nier as the composer.

Automata already looks like it has PlatinumGames’ trademark action and combat style. It should be interesting to see more come from the game throughout the rest of the year. The game is set in the same universe as the Drakengard series. It’s also set in the same universe as Nier, another Drakengard spin-off. NieR: Automata is due out later in 2017. The game will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
