In Civilization V, trade routes were automated caravans that happened to go from city to city. In Civilization VI, they’ll return, but, with a twist. For in the beginning of the game, the caravans will be the only way to build roads between your cities. This is a reference to how it was done in early history.
“We thought that was a good way to go for the early game, because historically roads were built along trade routes,” says Lead Designer Ed Beach to IGN.
You will be able to unlock engineers to construct roads later in the game, but with this focus, trading, and the routes taken to make trade possible, becomes a much more vital part of the game.
Civilization VI arrives October 21st.
