Persist Online Comes After30 Years
Since 1997, the fantasy MMO Tibia has been going strong. There was just something special about the MMORPGs of that era that didn’t die. Now, nearly 30 years later, its developer CipSoft has announced a zombie apocalypse RPG called Persist Online
“Persist Online combines the freedom of a persistent server with the thrill of zombies, guns, and baseball bats, so you can have hundreds of players playing together,” said the developer.
Originally designed as a hobby project by two CipSoft employees, Persist now has 14 staff members. according to Benjamin Zuckerer, Persist product manager, the MMO’s appeal comes from its unique interaction opportunities among players and the unpredictable stories that emerge.

Persist Online features persistent open worlds with day and night cycles, and with no instancing. This means that you won’t be in another dimension from your friends. Even though it is mostly PvPĀ you can team up with other players for extra safety. However, friendly fire is permitted and mutated bosses exist.
In the way they describe it – such as an MMORPG with zombies instead of orcs and a “tough old-school experience” – Persist looks exactly like what you would expect from a studio whose last game came out in 1997: dated, but fun.
It’s almost like they came up with the idea of an open-world PvP zombie survival shooter with looting and crafting entirely on their own. Maybe if you ask them about DayZ, they would have no idea. Just another similar game with the same style and settings.
Even though that’s unlikely, it’s cool to imagine that this genre will pop up again in a few years. Persist is due in early access on Steam soon, but does not have a release date. How they do not take another 30 years to give us updates and teasers. Well, its like them any way.
