What is a New Year's Resolution?

Year in and year out, we always hear about this resolution thing. But what is it really? It is some kind of a commitment to life? It is a change in one's behaviour? How does it differ from other changes we make about ourselves at some other times in the year?

For me I want to get rid of the debt. And also have enough good job for me this year. I also want to save some money too.

From what I understand it is like setting up a new goal or rules that you need to archieve in that year. Most people say that and make promises of what they are going to do that year.
