So I decided to to a little google maps and images search on some of the locations you traverse in the Metro series. I thought it would be interesting to compare what they look like since I don't live in Moscow myself. Anyway, here are some pictures I found interesting.

As you can see, some parts of both games are fairly geographically accurate. These devs obviously have a great love for the game they are creating.

Pics could use some resizing and comparisons, but pretty interesting, it's surprising how accurate everything is.

it always good to see game companies putting so much detail based on real references.

That is definitely a possibility. The page that I got them from was in Russian and I used Google translate to get the gist. Sorry for the confusion.

    speaking of abandoned stuff.
there was in the news, that they found a big mini-city (filled with immigrant and work-slaves) in one of the abandoned section below the streets of moscow.

an entire factory for clothing was there.. it also included sleeping sections, a casino and even chicken coop was found.

Fascinating pictures. I can really see the resemblance in the Bridge.

Dug this one up of the Botanic Gardens. In real life, its not just the botanic gardens but also the botanic academy of sciences building.

'contains a live exhibition of more than twenty thousand different species of plants coming from various parts of the world. The garden also has a scientific research laboratory and contains a rosarium with twenty thousand rose bushes, a dendrarium (arboretum), an oak forest with the average age of the trees exceeding 100 years, and a greenhouse of more than 5000 square meters'

Thanks Artyom, for being an asshole...

D6 and other military bases in Russia seem to have the same stigma and mystery of the likes of Area 51 and Dulce Airbase in the US.

noone knows if they really exist... but they might be there.

also dunno about Russia, but Mexico as multiple lines including hidden metro lines for maintenance. usually built next to the main tunnels or below them.

so I wouldnt be surprised if there are "hidden" lines in the Russian metro for maintenance.. and even military.

Yes,but unlike Area51 there are maps showing the exact location of Metro 2 and it's lines, when the construction of the metro 2 started, etc.

    http://metro.ru/metro2/secret_map/

    http://metro.ru/metro2/

    http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1817889

The site is in russian, but there is plenty of information in english too.
I think what's worthy of a mention is that this section is maintained by Юрий Зайцев (Yuriy Zaytzev).
