New player to Guild Wars, never played the original game. It looks like this could be the best game EVER ! Plan to try out things in the next beta, thinking Hammer & Rifle for weapons to start. Didn't see you posted, sorry. If you want to try a simple class to start with that you shouldn't die too easily with, I'd suggest an elementalist. It's a ranged class that can pack a punch, so it should be perfect for introducing you to combat in the game. Remember you have 5 character classes, so you can experiment with the others too. I'm personally going to roll with a Guardian, but I played elementalist and it's really fun.
Welcome! I hope you enjoy it and play non-stop☺. Here's a few tips on starting off. Make friends as quickly as you can and talk frequently. This makes the game much more enjoyable than playing solo. Also join a clan very quickly in the beginning. You can join multiple clans so don't worry about finding the right one for you right away. I hope to see you inside!
Warriors/Guardians are good for people who don't want to worry too much about their health (they're the only ones who wear heavy armour). Engineers/necromancers/mesmers are fiddly but allow you to have a more unique style; you'll have to invest your time into understanding how they work, but it's worth it in the end (if you're that kind of player/person). That said, my two favourites are ranger and elementalist. Ranger because it's sort of a nice bridge between fiddly and security, and really, it's just really fun to have a companion alongside you, ie. your 'pet'. This goes for necromancers too, however you feel far less attached to 'minions' which die rather frequently. Elementalists are just insanely fun - big animations, intuitive options, and a huge range of options. You can go from DPS (fire) to healer (water) in seconds, and again, there's a degree of unique specialisation as you eventually invest points in 'traits'. Join a friendly/big guild, or just shout out in the /map that you're a new player. People are generally always happy to help. Go through the map systematically so that you 'complete' maps to get rewards; complete 'hearts' to gain XP, as this is probably the fastest way to level up. As you level, you can do the main quest. But really, you can't go wrong. Don't get overwhelmed with all this stuff; just jump right in, it's very intuitive, and people will help you along the way.
You must all be pro on this game since 2012 and even 2014 is a long time for all who started playing this game. I'm new to it and I'm yet to decide if I'll go ahead and play it.
