Sorry guys. Never was fan of it. Yes, there are some cool things but never had the interest of playing any MGS game from beginning to the end. I always start, play a little bit and get bored really fast.
I have played the first three but since I played the third one first I could never get into the previous games. Never even wanted to get the next one that came out because it looked shit, i'm not sitting through like three hours of cutscenes. MGS5 on the other hand looks immense!
For your sanity i do recommend you read the plots of Peace walker first im so happy everyone liking MGS5
Sad thing, I had to stop at MGS3:sad:, In my stupidity I bought a 360 and never got to play MGS4.hwell:
Two years later, I'm necroing this with the new E3 2015 trailer. I know there has been a bunch of trailers released for it earlier, but creating all those threads for the new games has reminded me of this one. Maybe the discussion here could be revived. New trailer below: So it looks like Hideo Kojima is staying with Konami to finish MGS V (thankfully). Though I heard he is leaving straight after that, which is good news for him as apparently he did not even want to make MGS2 and every game since that one was kinda forced by Konami... Knowing this and looking at the quality of the MGS franchise only makes me more impressed by what Kojima can accomplish. I am a bit worried for the future of the series though, it will probably continue being milked to death as Konami is the definition of how to mismanage a shitty gaming company with numerous awesome titles under its wings.
"It bears a similar design to the off-shore decontamination facility Big Shell in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which both resemble British World War-II era anti-aircraft marine stations." That would explain it.
MGS5 takes place after the Peace Walker game, which in turn takes place after non-canon Portable Ops. The latter two were on PsP, but turned out to be extremely popular because of great design, great writing, thick plot and a lot of depth for a handheld game. All three of these take place before MGS1 and MGS2. Ground zeroes ties them with Phantom pain.
Yeah, MGS has gotten very complex and in parts overly so (in fact, it was already becoming complicated with the switch from MG to MGS). Kojima loves parallelisms and pairs in his stories. MGS2 was in many ways a copy of MGS1 as well as a "fuck you" to Konami who forced the game's creation... and it was still wonderful. It's easy to see how Kojima wanted to do something different as in MGS3 there was this Bond vibe. EDIT: Also, Peace Walker actually features what may be my favourite main theme in the entire series, especially the later part:
