Thought Stalker's question in the 'What are you currently playing?'-topic deserved its own topic. What are your favourite games by genre? Any generation, any platform. L4D2 (First-person Shooter) AOE 3 (Real-Time STragety Resident Evil 5 (Third-person Shooter) N/A (Tactical Shooter) Dead Island (RPG) unknonw (Stealth) Not sure(2D Fighting) Warhead? (Sandbox) Fear (Survival horror) N/A (Racing) Total War shogun 2 (Turn-based Stragety)
^ F.E.A.R. is most certainly not survival horror. --- Incidentally, I came here to add Condemned (first-person beat 'em up) and Mirror's Edge (first-person parkour) to the list.
Certainly not opinion based. FEAR can be scary because it executes its horror elements fairly well, that's undeniable, but the core mechanics of the game do not make it a survival horror game. FEAR is a horror-themed FPS. Resident Evil 0, 1, REmake, 2, 3 & C:V, Silent Hill series, Forbidden Siren series, Project Zero series, ... Those are true survival horror games; minimal to no HUD, the odds are severely stacked against the player, puzzles are an integral part of the experience, the games do not bombard the player with hordes of enemies and shooting stuff is not the core mechanic. Just because a Jeep has four wheels doesn't mean you can call it monster truck, if you catch my drift?
Indeed, it isn't. It comes close though. Very close. And this is not my definition, these are established survival horror criteria.
I agree actually. 2033 is close. But I think Last light may fully attain horror status. All we need is some slower paced times. Preferably the cannibals of the great worm cult.
Adding Enslaved Odyssey to the West (action/adventure/platformer) to my mine. A very flawed game sadly, but for what it lacks in execution it makes up for in story, sound and art design.
