Wе did nоt find аny stаtistiсаlly signifiсаnt соrrеlаtiоns, аnd givеn thе sizе оf thе sаmplе, еvеn if suсh соrrеlаtiоns rеаlly did еxist, thеir еffесt sizе wоuld hаvе tо bе vеry smаll tо rеmаin undеtесtеd.
To be honest I'm not sure that we can label how a person is by the character that they play, as everyone is different I've always found. I know for a fact though that I certainly wouldn't want to look at a character and think I can judge what sort of person is behind it, and like @Benoit W says, what character is picked is more than likely just going to be down to other reasons (like time) than the players actual personality.

Adding to that @Green67, there are also people who play more than one character in World of Warcraft. Some people play many, many toons. You can have up to fifty of them on one account for WoW. So, while some of those characters might be a mirror image, some of the other ones might not be. I know that my original character was much like me. Some of the later ones were the opposite. With that in mind, I don't see how there could ever be an accurate way to determine personality based on characters in WoW. I do think it's fun to mess around with the idea though. Is that Horde rogue really a dirty, nasty, sneaky dude in real life? Ha ha.
I cannot really say that I have thought about this or tried to apply it, but it is interesting and probably can tell you things. I do agree that you can tell the more adventurous people who like to try out more characters.
The character one chooses to play in any game is usually the exact opposite of who they see themselves to be. Sometimes you may find that a calm shy person chooses a less dominant figure to play in a game. This might be because the person sees him/herself as a hardcore fellow and by choosing the soft character, they are trying to test what being like that feels like. Other times people just pick the figure who shows them what they are like, an exact replica in terms of character.
I never stopped to pay attention to it. In fact, I think I can't establish any profile relationship based solely on that character choice issue.
People often select characters whose who have more or less the same behavior as themselves.Therefore, in my opinion, we can easily judge someone's behavior from the kinds of characters he selects.
@Athanas that makes me wonder what it would be like if it was all just us out there, looking the same as we do. It might be a really weird game to play, but kind of funny too.
Although I agree a little bit with you, I think this can't be considered as a rule within the world of video games. I mean, some people choose the character based on curiosity only.
It is really hard to really describe what a person it is like based on their character. Though I guess it would depend on their user name and fighting style.
Even if they have 49 alts? lol I think maybe the character appearance, or the name as someone else mentioned, would be a better way to assess personality. Even so, it's not necessarily accurate. A shy person in real life may be quite... flamboyant or loud in the game world. It's hard to tell what someone is like when they are hidden behind a keyboard. Agreed. I think a lot can be learned from someone's play style, but even more so from personal interaction with them.
Well, I know people who don't interact much in real life, but you'd never know it if you met them in the game world. They talk on voice coms, they type furiously in chat, they show off.. lots of things you'd never see them doing IRL. I think it gives some people a chance to be more adventurous than they normally would be. Other people might be the same in game and out. I think I am. I'm basically straightforward and say what I think. Sometimes, too much, lol.
Doesn't tell anything anymore. Everyone has multiple of those. But back in the old days it was easier (times of vanilla and BC). I played a Paladin because I want to roleplay myself into the order of Arthas.
