The only Tomb Raider game I played was the very first one on Sega Saturn back in 1996. Haven't touched them ever since. I am looking forward to see more gameplay for the reboot because I wasn't very impressed with what was shown at this year's E3...

I like the look of this new one. Might get it once it's cheaper...

  4. I don't really like this woman beating simulator so far.

Woman beating simulator? I must've missed a turn :derp:

  8. I assume you've also missed the ludicrous and unnecessary amounts of suffering Lara endures during what... Twenty/thirty minutes of gameplay shown on two last E3s? She almost gets raped and *le gasp* gets sent to the kitchen has to hunt and cook food for survival.

I know they need to establish Lara as a strong female character, since that's a reboot of the entire series, but so far it looks like a woman-beating simulator to me with lots of routine torture and number of moans that would satisfy porn industry for a solar year.

It is necessary for her character. She needs to be broken both mentally and physically in order to become the true heroine. Extreme situations such as a near-rape will only harden her.
In Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, the extremely violent audio passage when
Xiu, Lynch's girlfriend, gets raped and disemboweled is very tough to listen to but it shapes Lynch back into the unmedicated psychopath that we know and love from the first game
. It establishes a deep emotional connection between the player and the characters.
However, if the developers decide to turn Lara into a butch, the whole thing will backfire and all the early criticism such as yours will be fully justified because they would have turned her into a man with breasts.

I would absolutely adore to see Lara become as strong as Sigourney Weaver in AlienĀ³.

EDIT: I do agree with you about the excessive moaning in the E3 demo.

What is that even implying? That the actress is ill-equipped to picture the situation and is unable to reenact it vocally? That she is a one-dimensional cardboard cutout of a Californian hottie and that her acting school only taught her to moan and groan like a porn star? Or that the directors are unable to properly dress up the situation her character is in?

You see, with proper motivation, you get fantastic results. This is acting. This is art.

I think we see her face these trials and overcome them. It shows she is strong, can handle situations, and has more guts than most people. If anyone gets turned on by the bad guys' actions in there, they have a serious problem. :/

  12. It's implying that the amount of ridiculous trauma reactions is off the charts, dummy, you agreed to that a few posts back.

I think I should point out of something:

There are a plenty of men groan and moan when they are hurt, so what's the difference between female and male characters? And, there is no actual rape scene because it won't happen. She either has to fight back or die after the first rape attempt. I can't find an article anywhere that they made a clarity on that.

I know, I'm just pointing out that such cartoons are a silly way of conveying that as there is always more than one way to look at things. Also, there's no need to lower yourself to the level of name calling, lad.
It's because men are wired to put everything a woman does in a sexual context. So in a way, it's merely our fault that we interpret Lara's moans as excessive ;) Although I do think something is wrong with the way she delivers them; even with the images, I can hardly feel that she's in pain.
And not have healthy discussions about the game's subject matter? Fugheddaboudit!

Very true, it's good that it was brought up. There is a lot of stuff in modern games that is highly questionable, and it's great that people are against it. Personally, as long as this game is 18+, I see no real problems with it. And I'm usually quite picky. :)

Quite right. For instance, I've got more problems with the glorification of war in modern military FPS games than the genuinely disturbing audio segment I mentioned from Kane & Lynch 2. I think a mature approach towards violence and sexuality in video games is very much needed in order for it to be taken seriously by "the outside world" (i.e. non-gamers). As of yet, Silent Hill 2 is the unsurpassed champion of mature storytelling in video games.

Well, it's very clear that Lara is a sexual object in this game, as she always has been. At least now, she looks a little more realistic, though. In the older games, she looked like she was wearing an inflatable bathing-ring around her waist and had implantants in her breasts and has operated out some rib-bones, perhaps even some of her guts.

Wether or not the creative team of the game has intended for Lara to be a sexual object isn't certain, but I personally believe that it is a feature that the creators have used to lure and attract attention, and buyers. Of course, the game has a lot more to it. There's probably a good story behind it all, and Lara does indeed have character. She's not just some squishy doll being exposed to everything and anything for the player's amusement.

Regarding the game itself... It does look very awesome indeed with some shiny fancy graphics, and I just love the bow&arrow stuff and the whole savage/barbarian look to it. The whole jump here and there and be aerobic. It reminds me a lot of the game I Am Alive. -Not only in all the sceneries, acts and appearances, but unfortunately also in the essential gameplay in itself. I Am Alive had a gameplay that was way too linear. You could only follow one determined path, and the only thing stopping you was your excessively limited stamina. Tomb raider seems too much like that game from what I could tell out of the video; not enough free movements. Although Tomb Raider has proably a better story and better graphics, it does seem to have a much simpler movement-system and a lot more shooting here and there.

All in all, I think it looks like a PC-version of the phone-game called 'Temple Runner' :p
