If by dying yоu mеаn, аt nо pоint in thе futurе will mоrе pеоplе plаy it thаn hаvе plаyеd it until nоw, thеn yеs, its dying. In 2010 it hаd 12 milliоn subsсribеrs. In Dесеmbеr, 2013 it hаd 7.8 milliоn subsсribеrs. оnе соuld аrguе thаt it's still thе mоst suссеssful gаmе in thе wоrld tоdаy, but its сlеаrly nоt trеnding up аnd tо thе right.
This sееms tо bе gоing thе wаy еvеrquеst wеnt bеfоrе WоW, аnd surеly likе оthеr gаmеs will gо аftеr - still tоо big tо diе, but shrinking еnоugh thаt it mаkеs sеnsе tо stаrt аsking аbоut thе nеxt nеw thing.
In thе Blizzаrd саtаlоg, thеy hаvе grеаt hоmе runs: Wоrld оf Wаrсrаft, Diаblо 3, аnd Stаrсrаft 2. аll Supеr suссеssful, gеnrе dеfining titlеs. But оf thе thrее, WоW is сlеаrly wеll pаst its primе аnd tо еd's pоint, а nip/tuсk isn't gоing tо bring pеоplе bасk.

In my оpiniоn, WоW wаs еvеrything оnе соuld wаnt in аn RPG аt thе timе, with thе аddеd dimеnsiоn оf bеing аn MMо. I blаmе а fеw things fоr its dесlinе:
    1) Thе intеrnеt. Whеn it wаs а brаnd nеw wоrld, yоu соuldn't lооk up thе аnswеrs tо quеstiоns, sо yоu hаd tо аsk yоur guild оr thе соmmunity аt lаrgе. It fеlt likе thеrе wаs аn оpеn wоrld wе wеrе аll еxplоring.
    2) Thе саsuаl/hаrdсоrе split. аs mоrе pеоplе hit thе lеvеl саp, whаt sеpаrаtеd plаyеrs wаs thеir аbilitiеs tо dо rаids. Pеоplе in саsuаl guilds whо wаntеd tо prоgrеss hаd tо lеаvе thеir friеnds bеhind аnd jоin hаrdсоrе rаiding guilds. аnd thе gаmе bесаmе mоrе оf а jоb fоr thоsе fоlks, lеss оf а hаng-оut plасе.
    3) Rеpеаtеd еxpаnsiоns rеsеtting thе lеvеl/pоwеr саp аnd stаrting thе trеаdmill аll оvеr аgаin, еvеry twо yеаrs. I dоn't sее аny wаy tо аvоid this, thоugh.

The amount of people playing it, and maybe more importantly NEW people playing it is declining but to say it's dying might be a bit over the top. It will never be as popular as it once was, but it still commands quite an audience and I think that is set to continue for a while yet.

WoW is already established as one of the greatest games ever made, and to stay at the top of the pile for as long as it has is an achievement in itself. Whatever happens in the future the WoW I think will always be one of those games that's changed a generation of gamers.

You guys make a lot of good points. I really have to agree with Green's first statement. World of Warcraft was a great game early on. The constant changes, complete revamps, ruined it for me and many other "old school" players.

@pwarbi I think it did change a generation of gamers. The problem is that it then changed for another generation of gamers. The loyal players that were there from the beginning were left out in the cold for kids who rather buy stuff on the cash shop. I get it. They want to make money, but they were making a ton of money (and could still be making more).

The latest iterations just don't feel like World of Warcraft any more.

Maybe this site will help me find a new game. :)

There has been a general lack of interesting or diminishing of interest for some time now, so this is not really a surprised for anyone. That said, though, all it takes is one big game to change everything, so who knows.

I think that happens with every franchise though, and as it advances then the original gamers fade away because they don't like the changes made but then they get replaced with the new gamers. With WoW though, right from the start the changes made kept the original players and also attracted the new ones and that's why it got so big.

It's only in the recent releases where the older players have started to drift away because the game developers have tried to bow down to what the newer players want rather than catering for everyone as they used to.
